The Church of the Good Shepherd in Rangeley invites the community to a Requiem Mass for All the Faithful Departed on Tuesday, November 2nd, at 6 o’clock in the evening. This event is part of the church’s centennial anniversary celebration: The Shepherd’s Arms - 100 Years of Reaching Out in Love. All are welcome!

The Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, sometimes known as All Souls’ Day, is a traditional liturgy that reaches back centuries in which the faithful departed are remembered and prayed for. All are invited to add a deceased beloved’s name to the prayer list, and to bring a photograph or small memento of them to the evening service. While traditionally the prayers of the Requiem Mass are offered on behalf of those closest to us, this year the mass offers an opportunity to pray not only on behalf of people we have known and love and see no longer, but also those we may not know: the many victims of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Anyone wishing to add a name or names to the list of departed to be prayed for by name during the service should email names to goodshepherdme@myfairpoint.net, leave a phone message at 207-864-3381 or leave a written note in the church offering plate on Sunday morning, October 24th or 31st.

Often set to elaborate musical settings for multiple voices, the mass at Good Shepherd will be accompanied by simple, easy to learn, chants from Taizé, an ecumenical religious community in France, and led by the Good Shepherd choir under the leadership of Robert Ludwig, the church’s Director of Music. “The musical setting of this mass is meant to be more than just an aesthetic experience,” says the Rev. Thom Rock, Rector of Good Shepherd, “as we listen prayerfully, and consider carefully the words as well as the melody, we are invited to turn our listening itself into prayer.”

As part of the church’s year-long centennial celebration there will be special events each month. The next scheduled event is a community Holiday Carol Sing on Sunday, December 19th at 4:00 PM.
