July 6-7 Herb Welch Festival at Outdoor Heritage Museum -After the Weekend kicks off at Kennebago with the Black Ghost Classic, The Herb Welch Festival kicks into gear at the Outdoor Heritage Museum with a premiere of our new exhibit highlighting the exploits, art and genius of the legendary Herb Welch! Graydon and Les Hilyard will be on hand to personally sign their recently released book on the MAN himself; "Herbert L. Welch: Black Ghosts and Art in a Maine Guide's Wilderness". Other features of the day will be demonstrations, instruction and flies offered for sale by famous contemporary tiers; Justin Crouse, Peter Simonson & Les Hilyard. Focus will be on the original streamer patterns developed by Welch such as the famous Black Ghost, Welch Rarebit and Cupsuptic.
At 2 pm qualifying for the famous "100-Footers Club" will take place on Oquossoc Cove. Caster may use their own fly rod of any weight (sorry no two handed/Spey Rods) to attempt to cast 100 feet. Welch was a member of this long ago disbanded club. We are bringing it back and successful entries ($20.00 donation in support of OHM) will receive a "100 Footers" Patch and join the legend in this elite fraternity! Start practicing. The event continues on Sunday the 7th with Special Tours and a Talk at Herb's Home on Bald Mountain Road hourly from 12 to 3 pm, by reservation in advance at 864-3091, as well Fly tying and book signing until 2 pm at the Museum.
