Woody Allen’s Don’t Drink the Water is a madcap comedy and a social commentary with a pinch of nostalgia thrown in. The more things change, the more they stay the same. It seems like only yesterday the Cold War was a memory. Under the guise of “spy games” we have a family trapped in the American Embassy behind the Iron Curtain during their first trip to Europe. A caterer (a reluctant traveler) with his wife and daughter are the innocent victims of a political tug-of-war about espionage. What comes to the forefront are two stories of love—familial and romantic—the long-married couple that understand who they are and what they mean to each other and the two crazy kids who decide to marry after knowing each other a fortnight, proving we don’t know what life will throw our way, but we are sure to come out on the other side if we keep our sense of humor and surround ourselves with friendship and love.
